Abstract
The pruposes of this research were determine the natural occurrence of group A hemolytic streptococcus in throats of primary school children and determine some of the epidemiologic factors influencing incidence. The one year study period included school year 1980 to 1981. One urban school locating Wonju City, Kangwondo was selected and three rural schools near to Wonju City.
The number and percentage of children with positive cultures of streptococci were 80 cases (0. 94%) among 8484 cases. In April and July, there was low positive cases in throat cultures (0.65-0.75%) but in November, high positive cases (1.23-1.41%) were found.
A Total of 80 strains of group A streptococci were tested for susceptibility to 11 antibiotics in vitro. All of the group A streptococci were uniformly highly susceptible to erythromycin, carbenicillin and tetracycline; 96.25%. The susceptibility to colistin was not found.
Seventeen cases (80.95%) among 21 carriers, showed significantly high ASO titer after positive bacterial cultures.
